Departure at 08.00 a.m. Arrival at around 09.00 a.m. in Monreale. Meeting with the local guide and visit of the superb cathedral, a Norman architectural masterpiece, where the Islamic, Byzantine and Romanic culture meet to create one of the finest Italian Medieval works of genius. It was set up by William II in 1174 and quickly completed; together with the abbey, the royal palace and the archbishops’ palace, it forms an harmonious complex, dating back to a same period. The facade, overlooking piazza Guglielmo II, is sided by two square towers and preceded by a XVIII century portico. The vast and solemn interior is absolutely majestic. The nave, the sanctuary and the apses walls are entirely covered in mosaics on a golden background. The middle apse features the gigantic half bust figure of the Christ Pantokrator. Departure for Palermo, regional capital of Sicily, situated in a wide Tyrrhenian bay at the foot of Monte Pellegrino. We walk through the old city and we will discover the amazing Palermo’s monuments rich of Byzantine, Arab-Norman and Baroque architecture. Visit of Piazza Pretoria and the Martorana church, one of Palermo’s most famous Norman churches with very refined Byzantine mosaics inside. Visit of the cathedral, with its spire towers, its double lancet windows, its intertwined and pointed arches. Rising among the narrow streets and the 3 or 4 storey buildings of the Cassaro, it is fantastically majestic. Through the narrow streets of the typical market of the “Capo”, arriving in Piazza Verdi in front of the Massimo Theatre, the heart of the city. Leave of local guide, time for lunch. In the early afternoon, sightseeing tour of the city with stop at Piazza Marina (Villa Garibaldi). Continuation to the Convent of the Cappuccini and stop for the optional tour of the “Catacombs”. Return to the hotel in the afternoon.
